We made treats for the birds. They add a little color and whimsy to our January yard. It looks like a party.
The birdseed cones were made by Cole and Heather. We had a few sugar cones leftover from Heather's gingerbread castle. They mixed shortening and birdseed, shaped the mixture into balls and gently pushed the balls onto cones, with yarn embedded for hanging. When we ran out of cones, we just made balls. We set them out in the cold on the porch to harden and then hung them up.
We've had bird feeders in the crabapple tree, so the chickadees are well acquainted with us. It' didn't take them long to discover their new party snacks.
This one is keeping a close eye on Spike.

Patches (can you see her?) can only watch from the window.

Those birds look like they found your new treats easily. I loved the picture of the chickadee with his treat!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they will go after the orange slices at all?
Big snow storm expected here tomorrow. Some schools have already canceled.
Wow - that first bird picture is Vermont Life Calendar-quality! Fantastic! I want to make bird feeders like yours... how much shortening did you use in your ice cream cone mix?
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile I'm thinking how shortening is so precious to me over here, I could never allow myself to use it for birds! ha ha
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, great photos! Darlene did you get that idea all by yourself?
I suppose shortening is really like suet, isn't it?
So pretty! What a great idea! xo Laura
ReplyDeleteOnce again, Darlene, your photos are just gorgeous. I'm sure Vermont Life has a place for you as a freelancer?!
