Happy Birthday Heather!

To celebrate her 9th birthday, Heather wanted to try a fondant covered cake. She had brought home a cake decorating book from the school library and picked out one that called for plain  white fondant, decorated with food color markers.
We baked a chocolate and vanilla marble cake and covered it with buttercream which acts as a "glue" for the fondant icing.

Finally some snow, especially for Heather's birthday. Until now it has been warm and the ground has been bare, quite a contrast to Heather's birthday last year which was a sledding and skating party.
It was a heavy, wet snow and made the roads tricky. Lots of cars off the road - seems people forget how to drive in bad weather when we haven't had any in a while.
We decided not to deal with a full fledged kids party this year and instead let her invite a couple of friends, Harper and Kelby, over for the afternoon. We went to the movies to see the new Chipmunks movie, and then they played outside in the 4 inches of snow before enjoying cake and ice cream with all of us, plus Grammie and Joanie.

We all decided that we are not crazy about fondant, but it looks nice and was fun to try!

Happy Birthday Heather! We love you and are so proud of you!

  1. I will have to research "fondant". I have heard of it, but I really don't know what it is!
Loved, loved, loved studying the details on Heather's cake! Loved how she wrote her first, middle, and last name on the cake, the snowflake, the Christmas colors, and what looks like little "eye balls" along the cake base!
Glad she got to have two friends over and enjoy the snow!
    Happy Birthday, dear Heather!

    1. Sorry Lisa, I should have explained better - I just assume everyone is as addicted to baking shows as we are! Fondant is an icing or frosting that has a dough-like consistency. You roll it out and lay it over the cake. A layer of buttercream help it stick. Shapes can also be cut out of it with cookie cutters, as we did with the stars around the base of Heather's cake. It was fun to try, but the texture and flavor was not very appealing.

  2. We loved being at Heather's party and seeing the special decorating on the cake. It was great to see all her gifts--especially the comic book kit; that was intriguing! I think you are a talented artist! You had snow for your party!

  3. Thanks for explaining what "fondant" is, Darlene! Sounds very complicated and time consuming to me!
