Blackberries - My Favorite

The blackberries are ripening up little by little each day, so every couple of days we got out and pick some. We freeze them (well, Cole mostly just eats them) and will make a couple of pies when we get enough.

If they'd ripen all at once, we'd have more than we could handle.

Last spring Linda and Evan P. gave us 3 leghorn (yes, as in Foghorn) chicks that they didn't want. It turns out that Leghorns are a nervous, skittish, and flighty lot. Quite a change from our docile Rhode Island Reds and Heather's puppy-like bantam. No matter what kind of net we come up with to keep the Leghorns from flying out of their pen, they somehow find a way to escape. (chickens are smarter than we give them credit for)
Then they teach the reds how to escape and they all lay their eggs, hidden in tall grass. I found this clutch of 14 the other day. I didn't know how long they'd been there, so we just got rid of them.

Our garden has been disappointing this year, but we have had some nice broccoli, and our potatoes are pretty good.
This is swiss chard. It grows in a rainbow of colors. The yellow veins are so vibrant backlit by the sun. I also have some with red veins. Really pretty in a salad.
Peas are still growing strong and very tall.
Those darn chickens have been pecking at my tomatoes after they escape from their pen, and something went wrong with our corn - it only grew to be a couple of feet tall. Looks like we'll only have one pumpkin for Halloween this year. Overall, a disappointing gardening season. Maybe I'll try replanting some spinach and radishes for the fall and end the season on a better note.

Last Days of Summer Vacation

We're enjoying the great weather during these last days of summer vacation.
We spent some time at SL beach. Everyone else must have been school
shopping becaise we had the whole place to ourselves.

Later, we had a tea party.

(It's root beer)

Wayne and I explored old logging roads and snowmobile trails on our
mountain bikes. It was a busy day.

Cole is really interested in astronomy lately. We've found a couple of apps
Called Star Map and Star Chart that help you look at the night sky and locate
stars and planets. I know these pics aren't great. This was a few days ago when we were watching the meteor shower.

The Fair

The fair is in town. We went today, before the weekend crowds packed in. As always, we started off by seeing the animals in the barns.

Heather said she's going to buy this tractor when she grows up.

Our first ride was the ferris wheel. That was Heather's pick. She'd been talking about
It all morning. Wayne with the view behind.

Cole and Wes
in the next car.

Heather also loved the merry-go-round.

Heather and Wayne explore the house of mirrors.

Cole met up with Fintan and had a great time.

Although he doesn't look like he's having a great time on the "happy swing". Maybe because he's not sitting next to Fintan.

Afterwards Wes took them all, including Fintan, to the lake.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Wes took the boys to a Lake Monsters game the other night. Wayne and Cole took these pictures.

Looks like they got some ice cream.

Danny and Jacob were reportedly supposed to be at this game as well, but due to the large crowd, Wes and the boys couldn't locate them.
It was fun for wayne to see a professional game and Cole enjoyed the junk food.

My family made me a lemon cake.

Cooling on the porch.
The cake is smiling at me.

Playing in the Rain

An afternoon rain shower didn't deter the kids from playing outside today. (I don't know if you can tell from the pictures that it's really coming down.) That orange fence is the wiffle ball "home run" fence. Warning: if you come to town, you may be required to participate in a backyard tournament.

Mount Hor

This afternoon the kids and I and Joanie hiked up Mount Hor. It was a perfect day for it.

The views of Pisgah's cliffs were beautiful.
