Highlights of Cole's AAU Season (so far)

Heather is done for the season due to her broken wrist, but Cole still has a couple more tournaments. Here's a little video of the season so far.

An Early End to AAU Basketball

Saturday morning began bright and early in our house. Well, early but not so bright as we were dealing with a springtime storm of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.  I headed to Lamoille Middle School with Cole for his 8:00 a.m. tournament game and a little later, Wes set out with Heather to Cambridge for her 9:15 game.  (Every weekend brings 8 games, between the two of them)  After Cole's game, I headed to Cambridge to try to catch the last half of Heather's game.  I arrived to find them winning by a landslide.  Wes told me that Heather had fallen hard and awkwardly and hurt her wrist, but was back in the game.  She couldn't catch or dribble the ball, but was running around anyway, blocking her opponents.  After the game we doctored her up with some advil and wrapped  it up. She didn't seem to be in too much pain, but something about the way she was carrying and protecting her arm seemed very familiar to me (mountain bike accident 17 years ago). Wes went on to Cole's next game while Heather and I spent the rest of the day in the ER in Morrisville.

 She had indeed fractured her wrist.  You can see the crack in the x-ray below.

 It looks like the fracture may involve the growth plate so the doctor said she should see an orthopedic specialist, just to keep an eye on things, within 7 - 10 days.  For now, she's wearing a very itchy fiberglass splint, and then, after seeing the specialist, they will put a real cast on it.

Today it seems to be hurting more than yesterday and she also has a miserable cold, so she's feeling pretty awful.  She did manage to rally herself  into going to the 2 games she could not participate in, and cheer on her teammates. Luckily, she and the rest of the family are on vacation this week (but not me) so she can relax until we get her in to see the specialist.

Heather and I did some late night egg dying after getting home from all the basketball tournaments (see previous post) Were were not at our creative best.

We had Easter dinner with Grammy, Edwin, Sandy, and Elijah.  Heather and Elijah had an egg hunt. We had Cole's birthday cake. Joanie was at Laura's surprise party weekend, but she had left this fancy candle for Cole's cake

March 2018

I just thought this was funny - like having them labeled in case they get lost in the big store.

Regular season basketball is over, but now it's time for  AAU (ameature athletic union) Basketball. Both Cole and Heather have joined AAU teams.  Since it's not a school or community based organization, parents have to pay - unless you have a good group of parents and players who are willing to do some fundraising to help offset the costs of uniforms, registration fees, and tournament entry fees.  Heather's team organized a Spaghetti dinner held at Glover Town Hall, Saturday March 24th.

 There were tons of deserts.

 I used Mary's recipe for Maple Walnut cake.

 There were two seatings. The girls took a break in between to have their dinner. 

 The dinner raised about $800.  They also have been selling raffle calendars, visiting local businesses asking for donations, and had a silent auction.

Here they are in their first AAU tournament game in Cabot, wearing their nice new uniforms. Saturday, March 31.

 but in the same tournament, won this game against Lamoille at Berlin Elementary.

 After this game we had a little time to visit the Berlin Mall and found the Easter Bunny.

Saturday March 24th, Cole has his first AAU tournament. They lost their first game and won the 2nd.

 On the 31st, 2 games in Hardwick (so do you see how this went: Heather a game in Cabot at 8:00 am. Then in Berlin at 1:00. Cole 2 games in Hardwick 4:00 and 7:00. Somewhere in there, I also managed to get Wayne to his girlfriend's house in Westmore.) Anyway, true to their pattern, lost the first game, won the 2nd.

Feb 2018

Another basketball tournament - this one put on by the Lyons Club and held at Lake Region. Cole's basketball game, did not have a stellar year, only winning a few games. Below, they play Barton in the "consolation" game.

This was probably the most exciting "consolation" game in the history of the Lyons Tournament. OUr Glover boys really battled their hearts out against Barton (Wes happened to be substitute coaching this game) The scoreboard says it all - they went into double overtime, each overtime 3 minutes. They ultimately lost by one point, but it was a great game.

And these last few photos depict Cole's last home game as a 8th grader on his home court at Glover School. Again against Barton and luckily this one they won!

Basketball never ends though! Now that Jr. Hoops and the Middle School teams are done for the season, Cole and Heather have each joined AAU teams.  Cole's team is called The Rangers (as in Lake Region) and Heather's team is called the Northeast Kingdom Tar Heels.
