Open For Business - the 2nd Chapter

I had planned on taking Cole to Maine this past weekend, but since we were in the throes of a heatwave with no air conditioner in the van, I decided to postpone the 6 hour drive for another weekend.  As a result, we found ourselves with a few unscheduled free days. The kids have been hounding me all summer to open up the C+W, so here was our chance.

First thing in the morning on Saturday, Cole threw together some peanutbutter chocolate chip bars to sell.

 Wayne made lemonade and he and Heather cut flowers from around the yard to make bouquets to sell.

 We got to the C+W and Wayne was all business, while Heather posed for the camera.

 

 They sold some books and Heather drew a picture.

 Joanie was their best customer of the day.

 Wayne had made two signs and he and I shared the job of painting them. We placed them up and down the road a ways to give cars a heads up that business was open.

They ran the business Saturday and sunday and  grossed $28. Next day of business - Sunday, July 31, day after Glover Day.

Dinner on the Porch

A few days ago, Martha, Joanie, Julie, Lena, and Estelle came over for dinner.

The kids made ice cream in a baggie - shake, shake, shake...

 and eat, eat, eat.

  Then there was lots of playing to burn off all that energy.

 Lena and Cole are best buds.

The Lakes

A few days ago, Julie posted about our joint ventures to Lakes Crystal and Shadow with the kids. Here are just a few pictures that I have to add to that.

Heather and Estelle at Shadow. I doubt either one of them can see where they're going.

Sugar and Spice

 Both of them are everything nice.

In Estelle's words they are "best friends and best cousins."

Birdbath

Remember this picture?

Those of you who guessed that it was going to be a birdbath were right.  It was supposed to be decorated with  mosaic tile pattern, but since I kept forgetting to go to the hardware store, and because that kind of creativity is probably way over our heads anyway, we decided to just decorate the birdbath by painting it. 

 I didn't get a picture of him, but Wayne painted the saucer.

 All it needs now is a coat of sealer, some water, and some birds.

 I think the bluebirds that live in the bird house will appreciate it.

Scenes From Our 4th

To kick our 4th of July, Wayne made patriotic strawberries from Family Fun magazine.  He melted white chocolate chips, dipped the strawberries in it, then dipped them in blue sprinkles.

 The final product - really yummy!

 In the afternoon we went to the Barton parade.

 

 Then off to Shadow Lake camp for a suppertime barbecue with Joanie, Julie, Lena, Estelle, Tyler, Aimee, Perter, Jeanne, Katie, and the special guests of the evening, Ernest and Cecile.  I only took pictures of children, though.

                

 Later in the evening, Wes took a tired Heather home, while I took the boys to Crystal Lake Park for the Barton fireworks.

2 K Race (for ages 12 and under) starts at 10:00. Race starts at the Village Green, up Still Hill, through a path to Glover School, one loop around lower field, one loop around upper field, and finishes back down on the Green at the usual finish line. $10.00 for pre-registration (includes t-shirt), $15.00 day of race registration (includes t-shirt).

15th Annual Tour de Glover Mountain Bike Race Starts at 9:00 a.m. on the Village Green. 12.5 mile course finishes at the Lake Parker Store, West Glover. $15.00 pre-registration (includes t-shirt), $20.00 day of race registration.

Rain or Shine at Shadow Lake

We recently "returned" from our annual summer "getaway."  The weather didn't always cooperate while we were at Stuart and Emilie's camp, but rain or shine, the kids enjoyed every minute. Rainy afternoons were spent playing Monopoly, and between rain showers, Wayne, Cole, and Heather swam, fished, canoed, kayaked, and biked.

Cole caught his first fish.

Heather tried fishing for a few minutes.

There were roasted marshmallows and smores.

I'm sure you can imagine how much Cole enjoyed that!

The A-frame neighbor's took Wes and Cole for a spin.

Cole went on his first real bike ride with Wayne and me.  We rode past a large swamp and saw a family of loons.

On our last evening, Cole's friend Zephyr came over for supper. Unfortunately, the weather was drizzly, so no swimming, fishing, or canoe rides, but they had a lot of fun playing pretend Star Wars and card games.

It was a fun break before getting back to the responsibilities of everyday life.
