The Pond

Used to be, over at Drew Place, that Brian's barn was our after-school excursion. Wayne and Cole would always like us to walk up there to see the tractor or the hay wagon sitting in the barn. They'd climb up on the bulldozer that sits there and pretend to drive it around. They liked to go into the barn where he stores bales of hay and throw handfuls of it into the air. It was a good way to let off steam after being cooped up at school.

Now, here at Elijah's Place, the pond has become our every day after school destination. It's like a wild kingdom over there: frogs, tadpoles, snakes, dragonflies, slugs, snails, cat tails. In other words, every little boy's dream come true.

There are lots of frogs. None of them are safe with Wayne around.

Cole, being younger, is not as quick to catch the tricky little guys, but he enjoys trying.

Princess awaits her frog prince.

I think Wayne may become the next Jack Hanna.

Here he is, poor thing, unhappily trapped in a plastic container.
Actually it wasn't too bad for him. We let him go after a few minutes. He's safe until tomorrow.

  1. I was surprised to hear Vivaldi...I thought,"What a strange yet dramatic soundtrack to the story of a captured frog!" But then I realized Kermie's "Rainbow Connection" just hadn't loaded yet. Cute pics, Darlene!

  2. We loved seeing the three kingdomers enjoying the wildlife at the pond. What a great place to explore. Tell Heather to only kiss a handsome frog!

  3. I wonder if Sam Jr's advice to Heather is based on personal experience?

Just wanted to comment on how good those photos are! Especially the lighting in the pix of Cole and Heather.

  5. I dropped by after school today and off to the pond we went (I hadn't seen the blog yet). The big discovery was bear poop on the shore end of the dock...Wayne spotted it first, and identified it, and I had to agree. So it's not just W, C and H who enjoy the pond!
I swear, all the photos on the blog could have been taken on our trip today...Wayne caught a big one; it hung out in the plastic bug container til it was freed before we left; Cole was in the same spot, swatting at frogs, but never quite getting them; Heather was entranced with the frog in the container, and kept touching its slimy back.
How lucky can you be to have such a world in your backyard!
