July 4th

Our Patriotic Festivities began on the evening of the 3rd with fireworks in West Glover. Dante and Fintan's mom, Sylvia, invited us over to see the fireworks from their front yard, which is like having front row seats. Wayne's friend Ben also lives in West Glover, just a couple of houses down from Dante, so Wes, Wayne, and Cole walked over to spend part of the time watching the show with Ben.

While watching the fireworks there were sparklers.

The clouds threatened rain, which luckily held off. At one point, the clouds parted just enough to let the moon show through. It was really beautiful with the fireworks. This is the best picture I could get.

Julie's friend, Anna and her daughter Aleigha (I have no idea how to spell it) came for a visit. During the morning of the 4th Julie took them, along with Estelle and Lena, to the fairgrounds to see some animals and tractor pulls. In the afternoon, we went to the Barton parade. Julie decided to stay home so the girls could have their much needed naps.

In this picture, you can see Anna in the striped shirt and sunglasses. Her daughter, Aleigha, is walking towards Joanie. Heather is sitting in a little chair behind Wayne. The two blond girls on the left are former Irasburg students of Joanie's (one of them ran up to her and gave her a big hug) and they were also former preschool students with Wayne, way back in the day.
The parade...

This foal was not on a lead or in any way attatched to his mama. He just followed along, obediently. So cute. I want him.

Bread and Puppet...

When I was pregnant with Cole, I had a terrible dream one night, that Bread and Puppet had kidnapped Wayne to train him to ride a unicylcle in one of their shows. In my dream, when I called 911 to report the kidnapping, the operator told me not to worry - Bread and Puppet often does this and usually returns the child in about a week, after the performance.

Jeanne and Peter invited everyone over for a barbecue. Jeanne had the boys mesmerized by this book.
Cedric and Wes enjoy the deck.

Uncle Peter has a way with babies.
Lena wants to get her fingers in those curls.

Thanks to Peter and Jeanne for a great July 4th barbecue and thanks to Lizzy and Katie for playing with and looking aftar the kids.

Estelle seems to have escaped my camera for the day. The kids played in the basement a lot at P & J's house, so that's where she must have been for much of the time.
Hope everyone had a great holiday. Let us know what you did by leaving a comment.

  1. Your holiday looked like it was lots of fun, yet very busy! Loved the Bread and Puppet dream story, Darlene. When I see those big puppets in the parade, I can see why you might have imagined a kidnapping!

We had a nice fourth. Dan's parents came up from Massachusetts to see New Boston's parade. It was wonderful. There were some great floats to go along with the theme, "Cartoons".

Then we went to the chicken barbecue at the fairgrounds and watched some of the day long festivities at the fairgrounds. The Cowboy shootout on horses was fun to watch as our Historical Society president was one of the riders. Also watched a little bit of the mud volleyball which was fun. Anna stayed with her friends and saw the fiddlers contest and horse pulling contest, etc.

There were fireworks in the evening that Lisa and Anna saw. Grammie was pooped from the day and watched "The Capitol Fourth" on TV. Sara called Grammie while sitting on the grass at the National Mall in DC to tell Grammie to look for her on the TV screen! Dan helped the 4th of July Committee by parking cars at the Fairgrounds for the fireworks, so he saw them while working.

  2. Darlene, I have always tried to take firework photos, without success! Your's were spectacular! Prior to our parade in Richmond, there was a one mile fun run, mostly downhill. Tyler, Aimee, Matt & I ran it. Without having to build and sing on a float, I had time on my hands for this!! Watching the parade was boring, compared to being in it! It rained buckets soon after the parade was finished, and I walked back up the hill with Emily and Asa, who was covered with a garbage bag, but didn't mind the rain. Came home to get ready for our BBQ. Had set up for outside eating, but due to the on and off rain, ended up crowded in the kitchen!! Ed, Sandy and cutie, Elijah came, along with Mary & Jacob (Danny home with sick Gromett), Aunt Becky, Bill & Alex, my family, and Eliza's 3 friends, and Tyler and Aimee came for dessert. Ate strawberry shortcake and decadent Costco cake that Becky brought, so we were stuffed. At 9:30 watched our fireworks from Danny's town farm land, with some of their friends. Wonderful, and rain held off for the time being, and with the chilly wind, no mosquitos this year!! It was a great 4th, despite the rain, thunder and lightening!
