We have been given the gift of a beautiful, warm, sunshiny weekend. And I think these nice days are supposed to last well into the week. Let's all call in sick!
Our weekend started with Heather's milk turning green when she poured it onto her cereal on St. Patrick's Day morning. That was the extent our our St. Patrick's Day celebration. I had thought of making Irish Stew and soda bread, but decided against spending time in the kitchen on such a sunny day.
Wayne is under the spell of the Harry Potter books, so if you're looking for him these days, this is how you're likely to find him. He's read the first 3 books in the past week and half. Cole keeps complaining, "I miss Wayne because he's always reading those books!"
We've started to let the chickens run free outside their pen and Spike hasn't even tried to kill them at all.
The red hen was the first to start laying eggs, but Heather's little bantam hen is now laying little bantam eggs. They're very cute, but in a recipe, you'd have to use two eggs to equal one of regular size.
And here's the one who's not laying ANY eggs.
Ever since the snow cleared from the yard, Heather has bee working hard to learn how to ride her bike. As of today, she's just about got it.
Hmm, I guess Cole escaped my camera this weekend, but he did lose a tooth. I'll try to get more of him nest post.

Wow look at her go on that bike. Estelle is not nearly so stable. Course we hardly EVER take out her bike - too much work to pick it up off the balcony, carry it thru the apartment, out to the hall into the elevator and thru the entry to the building just to get out onto a sidewalk full of dog poop and buses and motocycles whizzing by - not a good place to learn to ride a bike! Maybe this summer Heather can teach Estelle. That green milk looks too cool - how'd you do it? Yum I want a fresh egg this summer. And tell Wayne, 5 years ago I got the Harry Potter craze and I was just like him!
ReplyDeleteGreen milk - Leprechauns of course! Just kidding. A few drops of food coloring in the bottom of the bowl, then the cereal, let the kids pour their own milk and it magically turns green.
DeleteI love seeing Wayne read! That's how we spend a lot of time in our house too... it was such a beautiful weekend. What kind of chicken is Heather's hen? It's really pretty!
ReplyDeleteI don't really know what kind any of our chickens are. The little Bantam is definitely the friendliest. She doesn't seem to mind being picked up and carried around at all.
DeleteWell, it has been a lovely spring/summer weekend! I can't believe how much Heather learned just since yesterday when I saw her practicing on the bike. She is doing a great job!!!! Loved the pictures of the chickens, and the one of the rooster with the sky behind him looks like it came out of a poultry magazine.
ReplyDeleteI remember a wonderful snippet from the movie "The Stone Reader" when the UPS man delivers a book to a boy just Wayne's age, and he opens it and settles in...it was a Harry Potter. I am glad you like them so much, Wayne. Those will have to be your next movie series!

Ah, Joanie, that's a snowbank behind the rooster, not sky. Nice thought though.
ReplyDeleteWayne read book #3 in one day. I have noticed that there is a whole Harry Potter Lego line.
He wants to watch the movie, but I don't want Cole or Heather to see it until they've read the book.
OMG, now I see it...I thought the snow was the sky!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the nice weather, Darlene, and scrapped cooking to be outside!
ReplyDeleteI remember when Anna read the Harry Potter books. There was no stopping her, just like Wayne.
Heather does incredibly well on her bike for one so young! Loved the "Whoaaa!"
Congratulations to Cole for losing another tooth!
Love, Aunt Lisa and Grammie
Glad you had such nice weather this weekend!
ReplyDeleteNot to be all "when I was your age", Wayne, but when I was your age I had to wait a year or two between each Harry Potter book and the wait was soooo long! I remember once Mom brought me to get the fourth book at midnight and then she took my brand-new book and hid it in her bedroom so I wouldn't stay up all night to read it. You'll have to tell me what you think of the books this summer when you've finished them all!
Love your chickens, can't believe that your dog doesn't chase them! Good going on the bike Heather!
ReplyDeleteJacob has enjoyed Wayne's daily calls about Harry Potter; and he inspired Jacob to start re-reading them again (3rd time around). I read the first one and never read on (guess fantasy just isn't my genre). Anyhow, hopefully Jacob won't "leak out" any information on what's to come.
ReplyDeleteRead on Wayne; and keep riding that bike Heather -- you are doing great!
Love,
Aunt Mary :)
